Electric Utility

Lyons operates its own electric utility.  We purchase electricity from the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN). As members of MEAN we participate in the decision making of the organization and have voting rights.

As a public, not-for-profit, community-owned utility MEAN also pays for our membership to the American Public Power Association.

Lyons does allow its customers  to own, operate or maintain their own eligible renewable energy generation equipment. The municipal code that regulates this equipment can be found in Section 13-2-70.

Installing renewable energy generation equipment requires a building permit. That application can be found on the town's website, under the building department

It also requires a net metering application for an interconnection and a customer owned interconnection agreement

The Town also recently modified the municipal code section 13-1-110 by adding section  (h)

An owner of an existing electric connection may request that their service be increased to a higher amp service, a larger service connection wire, to move their existing service line, or to add additional service lines for an Accessory Dwelling Unit. Such request shall require that the owner underground their service line at their expense from the transformer to the service panel.
