As Lyons’ matriarch and crusader, Mrs. LaVern spent a lifetime fighting for the economic, historical, and natural preservation of her hometown, Lyons, Colorado. Her credo “Lead, follow, or get out of the way” is etched upon the many projects she championed with her dedication and effort. After her family’s farm became part of the Town's original blueprint, LaVern was involved in countless efforts ranging from saving the original 1881 school from closure and removal, to preventing a destructive dam from being built. Whenever possible, LaVern attended every school, social and Town function for more than 50 years.
After LaVern’s passing in 2022, community efforts began to honor her life by commissioning a sculpture of her likeness. The Town dedicated the land overlooking LaVern M Johnson Park, the Historic Train Depot and Town Hall. Local sculptor, Christine Knapp, was commissioned by a committee that included the Lyons Arts and Humanities Commission (LAHC) to create this work. The Johnson/McConnell Family, LAHC/Town of Lyons, Blue Mountain Stone, Cemex, and many local citizens have all generously contributed to the project.
The sculpture was installed on Wednesday, July 24, 2024,the day after LaVern’s birthday and prior to the local Summer Concert Series in Sandstone Park on the same evening. Final touches on the landscaping have been completed by Blue Mountain Stone and will be filled in with native plant.
