Construction at LMJ Park

Streambank Improvements
at LaVern M Johnson Park

During the month of October

In spring 2023, the North St. Vrain saw its highest runoff flows since the 2013 flood. While the creek held up well overall, several sections of the streambank inside of LaVern M Johnson Park need repair to ensure visitor safety and prevent further erosion. Beginning in mid-October, crews will reinforce those banks with stacked Lyons sandstone boulders and restore any areas disturbed during construction.

The sandstone itself comes with a unique story—boulders excavated from the Lyons Valley Townhomes housing development were donated to the Town and will now be repurposed for this project. They are currently stored at the Public Works facility on Ute Highway.

Work is expected to last into November. During this time, some areas of the park will be closed to the public for safety. We appreciate your patience as we make these important improvements to protect both the riverbank, the park and its visitors.

CDOT ADA Curb Ramp Replacement Project Work

Begins week of October 6

Starting the week of October 6, CDOT will begin replacing non-ADA-compliant pedestrian curb ramps in Lyons along US-36 and SH-7, within the state right-of-way.

The work includes removing and replacing concrete ramps that do not meet current ADA standards due to issues such as slope, width, or surface materials. Temporary impacts to pedestrian access, adjacent properties, and some landscaping are expected during construction. The contractor is required to restore all affected areas to their original condition as closely as possible.

A detailed project schedule is currently being developed, and CDOT’s contractor will provide regular weekly updates.

New Parking for LVRP

New Lyons Valley River Parking Area

Town staff is moving forward with a new small parking area near the October/November Hole, just east of the former NCWCD pull-off by the "Welcome to Lyons" sign.

The two-acre Town-owned parcel was identified for parking during the 2016 Parks Flood Recovery Planning Process. The area has been cleared, and staff is currently reviewing contractor bids, with a goal to complete the project by the end of November.

This new lot will improve access to Lyons Valley River Park and nearby recreation areas. Stay tuned for updates!
