August Events in Lyons

Venus de Miles and Lights Out Lyons

Both the Venus de Miles women's cycling event and Lights Out Lyons return to Bohn Park for the 4th year.
Venus de Miles will be this Saturday, August 24th from 7:00 am till 4:00 pm. There will be a brief closure along 2nd Ave from 7 am - 9:30 am from Park St to the Recycling Center entrance as the riders depart.

Later that evening, residents are encouraged to turn off the lights and Explore Bohn Park in the Dark.  There will be a mini planetarium set up at the Lyons Regional Library from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.  As daylight fades, the magical world of night takes over. Residents are encouraged to enjoy a walk in the dark starting from the Bohn Park Shelter, at 7:30 pm to discover the secrets of the night, including some of the adaptations that nocturnal wildlife use to hunt, explore, and survive. The walk will be led by Deborah Price, a retired environmental educator with Boulder County Parks & Open Space, the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas, Rocky Mountain National Park and other nature and science organizations. In addition there are many opportunities for stargazing and exploring the planets with local scientists, telescopes and the community.  Residents are also invited to camp in Bohn Park for this one evening of star gazing. Fun for the whole family! Learn more about Lights Out Lyons.

Streambank Restoration

Colorado Water Conservation Board and St Vrain Left Hand Water Conservation District

Streambank Restoration

The  2013 flood caused many sections of the St Vrain River to reroute creating significant damage to stream banks and their stability. During the flood recovery period the Town was able to obtain funding from various State and Federal agencies to bank stabilization and repairs of all the streambanks within the Town limits.
However,  there is one last section of streambank just north of the new Summit Housing area to be restored. This bank has steep bank cuts from the flood and continues to erode, posing a concern for safety of residents and stream health. The Town has obtained funding from Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and St Vrain Left Hand Water Conservation District (SVLHWCD) to fund procurement of an Engineering firm to design the streambank repairs.

The design is currently at 60% design with an estimated timeline to have 100% of the design completed by September 2024. The Town has submitted an application request for additional funding for construction. As the project progresses, the Town will provide additional updates. Please contact the Town if you have any questions. .

Glass Recycle

Glass Recycling Pilot Program

Beginning in early August

Boulder County and the Town of Lyons are piloting a glass collection ONLY bin at the recycling center. The bin is specific for glass bottles and jars only and will go directly to Glass to Glass, a recycling facility in Broomfield to be recycles and create a new bottle for use. The program is new for Lyons and is a pilot program, one of just two within the State of Colorado.  Look for the big blue box that accepts GLASS ONLY. We expect the bin to be at the drop off center for one year to determine whether or not to keep the program.
