The Coulson Gulch Fire was reported by a ranger at the Button Rock Reservoir at approximately 11:50 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2024. At that time, the fire was estimated to be half an acre located just west of Button Rock Reservoir. A Type 3 helicopter conducted bucket drops to assist with the fire. Around 3:00 p.m. on the same day, firefighters responded to the Dry Saint Vrain Fire just northeast of the Dry Saint Vrain Trailhead. At the time of detection, this fire was less than a quarter acre in size, but located in difficult terrain. A Type 3 helicopter and ground crews worked to help contain the fire. The Dry Saint Vrain fire was declared 100% contained at noon on July 10, 2024.
Investigations determined that both fires were caused by lightning strikes. A Multi Mission Aircraft conducted a lightning-detection mission and found no additional new starts in those areas.
