Mission The Sustainable Future Commission will inspire, motivate and lead the community towards a future that is increasingly resilient and locally sustainable by prioritizing the reduction of human impact on environmental systems.Purpose The purpose of the Sustainable Future Commission is to advise the Board of Trustees on matters relating to sustainable* practices and policy and to support & improve the environmental stewardship of the Town and its citizens through:
*For the purposes of context, sustainability can be defined as the ability of the global ecosystem to maintain ecological processes, functions, biodiversity and productivity into the future. Commission Members Justin Spencer – Chair Justin is a building energy efficiency engineer and a consultant to utilities on issues of building energy efficiency and renewable energy. Kate Nelson Kate is an Environmental Educator for Eco-cycle working on a variety of issues including air quality, solid waste, energy and hazardous materials. Coco Gordon CoCo is an artist, certified Permaculture designer and an initiating member of the group for Transition Lyons. Formerly of New York City, she served there with Women for a Healthy NYC, the Civic Alliance Life Cycle Scorecard, and Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC Betsy Burton Betsy is a driving force at the Green Heart Institute, an organization that advises people on how to reduce their environmental impact. She is passionate about local and organic food production. Ashley Ahrens Ashley is a consulting economist who, in additional to litigation support, works in the areas of natural resource utilization and local public finance. Omar Postigo-Martell Omar Postigo-Martell is a (Spanish English) Interpreter and Translator, specializing in psychology, health care, finance, insurance, and environmental science. He has a multi-disciplinary background that includes project management, environmental compliance, fund development, and sales. He has resided in Lyons with his wife, Lisa, and his son, Taíno, since 2006. Sharon McConnell
Sharon D. McConnell is a life-time Lyons resident and member of two Lyons pioneer families who loves Lyons! Born and raised in the Lyons valley, Sharon is committed to bringing back (or restoring might sound better) the clear star-studded night skies, clean waters and quiet peacefulness she remembers of her youth, to preserve and sustain for future generations.
