Volunteers and Donations
Volunteers are welcome both in the Library, on its two boards of trustees, and at special events.

At present, we have regular volunteers who prepare books for the shelf; maintain records including accession, ILL, circulation; prepare A/V materials for circulation; update monthly New Additions records; read for Kids Only Story Time; print up library brochures and so on.

Different time commitment levels:

  1. Once/month

  2. Weekly

  3. Emergency

Regular volunteers set aside a specific time for the library so that shifts can be scheduled productively. They agree to notify library staff as far in advance as possible when trips/ vacations/ or other commitments will keep them from coming in at their regularly scheduled time

Our most pressing need at this time is for Fridays, Saturdays, and signup for emergency call list.

For safety, the Library always schedules at least two people present at a time. There is always a staff member present. When volunteers are teamed with staff, it allows the library to be open for longer days than it would be otherwise.

An emergency is when library staff would have to close the library because of illness, accident, or other instances where scheduled staff or volunteers cannot fulfill their commitment. Emergency volunteers are called only in those circumstances, and are encouraged to bring projects of their own with them, whether reading, knitting &c. Emergency volunteers are of course, welcome to help out at the checkout desk, but are by no means expected to assist in Library activities since they do not receive special training.

Lyons Depot Library Board is appointed through the Town of Lyons by the mayor. The board is comprised of seven members: four (4) Town of Lyons residents, and three (3) county residents. This Board is responsible for recommending policy changes, and fundraising events such as the Holiday Bazaar and GO Days Book & Bake Sale.

Friends of the Lyons Depot Library Board is elected by the general membership of the Friends of the Lyons Depot Library, which holds its annual meeting in May of each year. The Friends are an independent, 501c(3) nonprofit.

Donations of books, CDs, DVDs, & other material are welcome, with the understanding that final disposal of donated items is subject to library staff decision. Year-end receipts are provided upon request.
