Children’s Summer Reading Program

It's all about wings this summer, ... on bugs, on birds, and on magical beings that just stretch, and leap and soar. Flight. We can only dream, and climb into planes, hot air balloons, gliders or other mechanical creations.

Yet in the realm of the imagination, the feet are not fetters, and we, too, can stretch and leap to become airborne with Bugs, Birds, and the Be-winged on adventures real or fantastic.

Where are these stories? Who are these creatures? Explore and find them in the library this summer. (True, not ALL bugs have wings, but ALL bug stories are O.K. for reading lists.)

Bonus: Look for the many new nature DVDs featuring these creatures as well.

LEVEL ONE HINT: If the airplane has eyes, it IS a be-winged creature: Non readers ... Draw pictures of favorite Bugs, Birds and the Be-winged from stories read to them., and keep a list of all books that have any of these creatures in the story.

LEVEL TWO: Readers ... Draw pictures and/or recap the story from favorite books that have Bugs, Birds or the Be-Winged. (These can also be non-fiction books or nature films.) Keep a list of everything that has characters or encounters with these creatures.
