In 2015, LaVern M. Johnson Park's - previously Meadow Park - recovery plan was established, and construction began. On Friday, September 9, 2016 LaVern Johnson Park opened and was the first park to be restored since the 2013 flood.
Bounded on three sides by the North St. Vrain Creek and sandstone cliffs, LaVern Johnson Park is a community favorite year round. There is an abundance of recreational opportunities which include picnic areas, RV parking/tent camping, playground area, Lyons Whitewater Park, splash pad, an ice rink in the winter, there is plenty of room to escape and take in the beauty of Lyons no matter what the season. Camping fees start at $15 a night for tent spots to $40 a night for RV’s with full hookups. The new Whitewater Park is a beckoning for kayakers and tubers to drop in and go for a ride. The quarter mile horseshoe shape park has 8 features that are spread out nicely with big pools and eddies. Our Whitewater Park is the perfect challenge for the novice boater and an excellent time for the more experienced. On a hot summers day tubing is also available along the river. LaVern Johnson Park is also home to wonderful picnic areas and shelter facilities that can be rented for events or parties.
